{"id":1084,"date":"2022-10-23T15:20:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-23T15:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/?p=1084"},"modified":"2022-10-20T17:23:04","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T17:23:04","slug":"the-spirit-of-error-in-1-john-4-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/?p=1084","title":{"rendered":"The Spirit of Error in 1 John 4.6"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>1 John 4.6 ends with a sentence translated variously in English:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>From this we know the Spirit of truth and the <strong><em>spirit of deception<\/em><\/strong> (HCSB)<\/li><li>This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the <strong><em>spirit of falsehood<\/em><\/strong> (NIV)<\/li><li>By this we know the Spirit of truth and the <strong><em>spirit of deceit<\/em><\/strong> (LEB)<\/li><li>By this we know the Spirit of truth and the <strong><em>spirit of error<\/em><\/strong> (ESV)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first element of the two is pretty solid\u2014Spirit of truth. But there is a little difficulty when it comes to handling the second part: deception, falsehood, deceit, error. While all related, these words convey various distinct ideas. What is going on here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Summary: the idea here is not a spirit who is true vs. a spirit who is in error; rather, the <em>spirit of truth<\/em> is the spirit which leads God\u2019s people to remain in all things from God and the <em>spirit of deceit\/deception<\/em> which aims to bring people to evil, blasphemy, and apostasy.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Error\u2019 in Greek<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Greek at large, the word here translated &#8216;error&#8217; or &#8216;deception,&#8217; <em>plan\u0113 <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03bd\u03b7), generally means \u201cgoing astray, error.\u201d It is related to the word from which we get our word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/planet#etymonline_v_16437\"><em>planet<\/em><\/a>. Without a telescope, planets look like stars. However, they behave quite perversely\u2014they \u2018wander\u2019 around in the night sky. The Greeks named these celestial bodies \u201cwanderers,\u201d as in, \u201cstars which have gone astray\/wander.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our word of interest, <em>plan\u0113<\/em>,<em> <\/em>usually does not indicate a malicious intent. That is, a \u201cspirit of error\u201d would generally mean a spirit that is astray, rather than one whose nature and aim is to lead others astray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If general Greek were all we had to go on, this would be the end of the discussion. However, within the rich tradition of Jewish and Christian writings, we see another, more specific usage emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Malicious spirit leading others to wander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The<em> Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs <\/em>is an interesting work, written mostly before the New Testament. It is mostly a Jewish work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">I say mostly because, like many Jewish works from antiquity, its exact date of composition is not known (and possibly different parts come from different times) and it was transmitted almost exclusively by Christians for use by Christians. In transmission, some people could not resist adding explicitly Christian ideas here or there into the work.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>It is interesting for a variety of reasons, but most notably because it includes several uses of this same expression in Greek\u2014\u201cspirit(s) of <em>plan<\/em><em>\u0113<\/em>.\u201d This expression occurs at least 13x.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within these various passages, we see that \u201cspirits of <em>plan\u0113<\/em>\u201d<em> <\/em>means something more than just spirits that are wrong about something. Instead, \u201cspirits of <em>plan\u0113<\/em>\u201d refers to Satan and his spirits who tempt people to evil, blasphemy, and apostasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Malicious or Righteous guides<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1 John 4.6 ends saying, \u201cfrom this we know the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of <em> <em>plan\u0113<\/em><\/em>.\u201d We have good reason to suppose that <em>plan\u0113<\/em> here refers to the spirit of antichrist, namely the spirit of Satan. This is a spirit of <em>deception<\/em> as opposed to the Spirit of truth. The idea is not that there are two spirits, one true and the other in error, and we get to choose who to follow. The picture here is actually more like shoulder angels from the world of cartoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Kronk confussed by two shoulder angels\" class=\"wp-image-1083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-1536x768.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/emperors_new_groove_quiz_kronks_angel_and_devil_disney_quiz_-2048x1024.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We recognize the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of deception by how they relate to Jesus Christ come in the flesh. The Spirit of Truth leads people to Jesus and enables them to hear his voice. The spirit of deception leads people away form Jesus. In the context here in 1 John, it is a subtle leading away. It is not a frontal assault on all that is good and godly, but a continued practice of deception calculated to lead followers of Jesus away to become followers of antichrist, <a href=\"https:\/\/fbcmstq.org\/?p=1033\">the replacement Christ<\/a>, the enemy of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage is just one of many facets of 1 John which call for followers of Jesus to be active in following the \u201cgood shoulder angel,\u201d the Spirit of Truth, and warning them that the \u201cbad shoulder angel\u201d is real and is actively involved in trying to deceive people and lead them astray.
